The BRICS Goa Summit: What is in it for Africa?

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, October 25, 2016 (BRICS) -- The eighth BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit concluded on 16 October, 2016, in Goa, India. Although the BRICS nations are facing economic and political headwinds, they are still seen as constituting new global forces – individually and collectively. Their global strength lies in the fact that they constitute over 40 percent of the world’s economy and a similar population count. BRICS annual summits have become major geopolitical events during which dominant powers of the so-called global north are challenged.

This growth is largely attributed to macroeconomic stability, improved business and investment environment, better economic governance and political stability. The growth has, however, been driven by export of primary commodities. The strength of the economic growth in Africa - the commodity price boom - also happens to be the weakness of African economies.

India: Strengthening Ties with Africa

INDIA, July 5, 2016 (IDSA) -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to embark on a tour of four African countries – Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya – from July 7 to 11, 2016. This is his second tour to Africa. Last year, he had visited Seychelles and Mauritius. His tour also comes on the heels of President Pranab Mukherjee’s and Vice President Hamid Ansari’s visits to several African countries in West and North Africa. The forthcoming visit will add to the number of initiatives that have been taken by the Prime Minister to strengthen ties with African countries.

China, Russia helping Zimbabwe ride out West’s bullying

MOSCOW, February 25, 2016 (TBP) - The year 2016 promises to see the deepening of Zimbabwe’s relations with Russia and China, old friends who supported our quest to overthrow colonialism as long ago as the 1950s.

Both Russia and China are stepping up economic investment in Zimbabwe. They are also continuing to oppose the illegal sanctions the West has imposed on us — a blatant attempt to change an elected government by crippling our economy in the hope that the masses would rise up against it.
